The Demographics of Blogging

According to an analysis performed by Sysomos of 100 million blog posts (a lot by anyone’s metrics) young female bloggers from California represent the largest specific demographic within the blogging world. It would be even more interesting to understand where in California these women are posting on their blogs. However, despite the lack of specific cities that bloggers are posting from there are many other surprises inside of this recently published report.

For instance, women are only more prevalent as bloggers by 1.8%, thus when taking into account the natural split between the number of men and women, this actually is a near perfect representation of reality. “Blogging, the internet, is a “gender neutral” space” according to the authors of the findings. Another interesting finding is the age breakdown of the blogosphere.

With the great portion of bloggers, 53.3%, being between the ages of 21 and 35, it would not be difficult to assume that common subjects being blogged about would be themes such as new careers, sex and music. Following this age group are bloggers 20 years old and younger, which represent 20.2% of this world. Close behind are 36 – 50 year olds who represent 19.4% of all bloggers. In a distant last are those individuals who are 51 years old and older with 7.1% of the voice in the blogging world.

Finally, the location of bloggers. It should be no surprise to you that the most proliferate population of bloggers are in the US. I will justify that statement by pointing out the native homes of TypePad, WordPress and Blogger are all domestic. Thus, the early and mid-term adopters of these technologies would logically be a domestic occurrence as well. Take a look at these charts and you will see for yourself that, with the exception of Ontario, the regional hotspots for bloggers lay right here in the US. Woot!

Ultimately though, these facts are noteworthy but essentially irrelevant as the real value of a blogger isn’t who you are but what you have to say. It really doesn’t matter where you are from, how old you are or whether you are a man or woman. What matters is that you provide insights and good content  for your readers. Long live witty and ironic opinions.
